"The Secret"
My mum gave me the book “The Secret” for Christmas some time ago. I keep trying to read it, getting incredibly frustrated and then stopping.
Over the last few days I’ve been trying again. Eck - so many things I don’t like.
Alright. The idea is this: Everything that happens in your life you have created. If you think negative thoughts negative energy comes into your life. If you think positive thoughts positive energy comes into your life. This is infallible. You create everything in your life. Everything.
So, there’s this bit on page 29 talking about how everything that is bad that has happened in your life you have attracted. My “never blame the victim” senses kick in and I don’t like this. I refuse to believe that victims of rape for example attracted the rape into their lives by their thoughts, feelings and attitudes. Nu-uh.
So here’s a quote:
“Often when people first hear this part of The Secret they recall events in history where masses of lives were lost, and they find it incomprehensible that so many people could have attracted themselves to the event … the frequency of their thoughts matched the frequency of the event … thoughts of fear, separation and powerlessness, if persistent, can attract them into being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Ouch. Way to blame victims of terrible tragedies for what happened to them. Yuck, yuck, yuck.
So, thats my biggest problem with The Secret. There’s more.
They have this section focusing on manifesting and creating your bodies ideal weight.
“The second thing to know is that the condition of being overweight was created through your thought to it. … If someone is overweight, it came from thinking “fat thoughts” whether the person was ware of it or not. A person cannot think “thin thoughts” and be fat”
They go on to talking about how if you believe you have a thyroid problem or a slow metabolism and things like that then you’re thinking “fat thoughts” and basically that all those things are just excuses. Anyone can be thin if they think “thin thoughts”
So there’s a thing on asking the Universe (capital U) for you to get your ideal weight, and then believing you’ll get your ideal weight and then receiving your ideal weight. Here’s a quote from the believing section:
“Make it your intention to look for, admire, and inwardly praise people with your idea of perfect-weight bodies. Seek them out and as you admire them and feel the feelings of that - you are summoning it to you. If you see people who are overweight do not observe them, but immediately switch your mind to the picture of you in your perfect body and feel it”
Yeah. That bolded section was my own emphasis. Just ignore overweight people. Nice advice there! Nice way to encourage hatred of fat people. Wouldn’t it be nice if rather then encouraging people to seek thinessesses they encouraged people not to hate on overweight folk?
‘Pparently thats the sort of goal you _can’t_ focus on.
“Resistance to anything is like trying to change the outside pictures after they have been transmitted. Its a futile pursuit. … As you resist what has appeared you are adding more energy and more power to those pictures you don’t like, and you are bringing more and more of them at a furious rate … The anti-war movement creates more war. The anti-drugs movement has actually created more drugs. Because we are focusing on what we don’t want … People believe that if we really want to eliminate something focus on that. How much sense does it make for us to give that particular problem all of the energy as opposed to focusing on trust, love, living in abundance, education and peace?”
See according The Secret we can’t focus on ending hatred of fat people from the world, because by doing that we only encourage more fat hatred. Eck. “It’s not your job to change the world, or the people around you. Its your job to go with the flow of the Universe and to celebrate it inside the world that exists.”
We apparently have the power to change everything - but the status quo.
Yuck, yuck, yuck.
